PDF Information

Read a PDF's page count, version, encryption flag and file size. The file is uploaded briefly and nothing is kept.

Free to use No sign-up required Files deleted after processing

Upload a PDF to see four things: how many pages it has, which PDF version it uses, whether it is flagged as encrypted, and its file size. It is a quick fact-check before you split, merge or compress a file. It is not a metadata viewer, so it does not show the title, author, dates or fonts. Unlike some tools that read the file locally, this one uploads it to our server briefly, then discards it.

Overview

About PDF Information

The four values

ValueWhat it tells you
PagesThe number of pages, read from the PDF itself. Use it to write correct ranges for Split PDF and Extract PDF Pages.
PDF versionFor example 1.3 or 1.7. A newer number means the file may use newer features; it says nothing about quality.
EncryptedYes or No. See below: Yes does not always mean a password is needed to read it.
File sizeThe size of the uploaded file.

The tool reads the page size too, but the result panel does not show it. To see the size of every page, use the PDF Page Size Analyzer.

What "Encrypted: Yes" means

We tested a PDF with only an owner password, which restricts printing but can be opened by anyone. It was reported as encrypted, and the other tools on this site, such as Extract PDF Pages, Rotate PDF and Compress PDF, still accepted it. Merge PDF did not: it failed with a general error. A PDF that needs a password just to open is different: it is rejected with "The file is not a valid PDF or is corrupted", which is true of every PDF tool here. So Yes means "has some protection", not necessarily "locked"; the quickest way to learn whether a file is usable is to try the tool you need.

What is not shown

Title, author, subject, producer, creation and modification dates, fonts, bookmarks and form fields are not reported. Many competing viewers list them. If your goal is privacy, note that PDF metadata can contain names and software details; this tool will not show you whether it does. For checks on structure, use the PDF Structure & Validity Checker, and to see whether a PDF has real text or is a scan, the PDF Text Density Checker.

Limits

Files up to 20 MB and 200 pages. A file that is not a valid PDF is rejected with a message.

Compatibility

Supported Formats

Accepts PDF files up to 20 MB and 200 pages, identified by their contents. The result is shown on the page and no file is produced. Files that need a password to open are rejected as not valid.

Highlights

Features

  • Four plain facts Pages, PDF version, encrypted or not, and file size.
  • Page count from the file itself Counted from the PDF, so you can use it to check page ranges.
  • No output file The result appears on the page. Nothing is created for you to download.

Applications

Use Cases

  • Finding the page count before writing a range for Split or Extract
  • Checking the PDF version for a system that requires a minimum
  • Seeing whether a file is flagged as encrypted before you merge it
  • Confirming a file's size without opening it

Good to Know

Limitations

Only four values are shown. Title, author, dates, fonts, bookmarks and form fields are not. "Encrypted" can mean only a restriction such as no printing, and some tools, such as Merge PDF, still fail on such a file. A PDF that needs a password to open cannot be read at all. The file is uploaded to our server for the check.

Files are processed on our servers and are not shared with third parties. Files are deleted as soon as processing or download finishes. Any leftover temporary file is removed automatically by our cleanup process within the configured retention period (60 minutes). See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Encrypted: Yes" mean?

The PDF has some form of protection. It may only restrict printing or editing while anyone can still read it, or it may need a password to open. Our test file with only an owner password was reported as encrypted and still worked in Extract, Rotate and Compress.

Does it show the title, author or creation date?

No. Only page count, PDF version, the encryption flag and file size are shown.

Why does a password-protected PDF show an error?

A file that needs a password to open cannot be read, and is rejected with "not a valid PDF or is corrupted". Remove the password in the program that made it and try again.

Is my PDF uploaded?

Yes, briefly. It is sent to our server, read, and not kept; no output file is made. Tools on this site that read files locally are marked as such, and this is not one of them.

Can I find the size of each page here?

No. Use the PDF Page Size Analyzer, which lists every page's size and flags mixed sizes.
