Split PDF

Cut a page range, such as 3-7, out of a PDF into a new file. One range gives one PDF.

Free to use No sign-up required Files deleted after processing

Type a page range such as 3-7 and download those pages as a new PDF. Each run gives one file. There is no "split into several files in one go" option and no "every page separately" mode, so to cut a PDF into parts you run it once per part. If you need pages scattered through the document, or want them in a different order, Extract PDF Pages is the same operation with a list-style example.

Overview

About Split PDF

How splitting works here

The pages you name are copied into a new PDF in the order you write them, and everything else is left behind. The pages are copied rather than redrawn, so their text stays selectable and their appearance does not change. In our test, a 10-page text PDF of 7.6 KB gave a 3-page PDF of 3.3 KB for pages 2-4, and the first lines of those pages were pages 2, 3 and 4 of the original. How much smaller the result is depends on what the kept pages contain, so it is not always proportional to the page count.

The part this site does differently from many splitters

Many online splitters produce several files, for example 1-10, 11-15 and 16-25 in one go, or one file per page. This one makes a single PDF per run. To get three parts, run it three times with three ranges. The upload must be repeated each time, since nothing is kept between runs. For a long document, it can be quicker to note the ranges first; the guide PDF page ranges explained shows how.

What you can type

A single page (4), a range (3-7) or, although the field suggests one range, a comma-separated list (1,5 or 1-3,7); we tested "1,5" here and it gave a 2-page file. Spaces are ignored. The tool is stricter about mistakes, with a specific message for each:

You typeResult
0"Page numbers must be 1 or greater."
5-2Refused: the start page is after the end page
11 (in a 10-page PDF)"This PDF only has 10 page(s)" and the page named is out of range
8- (no end page)Refused as not a valid page or range
a-b"Use page numbers and ranges only, e.g. 1-3,5"

Write the last page number explicitly; there is no "to the end" shortcut. Find the page count with PDF Information.

Limits

Up to 20 MB and 200 pages per PDF. A PDF that needs a password to open is rejected as "not a valid PDF or is corrupted".

Supported Formats

Accepts PDF files up to 20 MB and 200 pages, identified by their contents. Page input: a page number, a range such as 3-7, or a comma-separated list; the result is always one PDF. Password-protected files are not supported.

Good to Know

Limitations

One new PDF per run: no multi-file split, no "every page" mode and no split-in-half mode. Ranges need an explicit end page (8- is refused). Password-protected PDFs are rejected. A page number beyond the real page count is refused, not trimmed.

Files are processed on our servers and are not shared with third parties. Files are deleted as soon as processing or download finishes. Any leftover temporary file is removed automatically by our cleanup process within the configured retention period (60 minutes). See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I split a PDF into several files at once?

No. Each run creates one PDF from the pages you name. For three parts, run it three times with different ranges.

What is the difference between Split PDF and Extract PDF Pages?

On this site they use the same method: you name pages and get them back as one new PDF, in the order you write them. The pages differ in how they are explained, and both accept a range like 3-7 or a list like 1,3,5-7.

Do the pages lose quality when split?

No. The pages are copied, not rendered again, so text stays selectable and images are not recompressed.

Why does it say my page is out of range?

The range is checked against the real number of pages in the file. In a 10-page PDF, page 11 is refused. Check the count with PDF Information first.

Can I write 8- to mean page 8 to the end?

No. That is refused. Write the last page number, for example 8-10.
