About Us

Free Tool Desk is a set of free online tools for images and PDFs: converters, compressors, resizing and cropping, page tools for PDFs, checkers that report what is inside a file, and two text editors with OCR that runs on your own device. Each tool does one job, and each tool's page explains what it does, what settings it uses and where it stops.

Why this site exists

Many online file tools hide the real behaviour behind marketing: they do not say what quality they use, which files will not shrink, or what is lost in a conversion. We try to do the opposite. Where a number appears on a tool page, we have run the tool on a test file to get it, and we say that the test file was generated and that the result is not a benchmark or a promise. Where a tool cannot do something, such as choose a page, pick a frame or hit a target file size, the page says so.

How the tools work

Most tools on this site process your file on our server: the file is uploaded, processed to produce your result, and then deleted as soon as processing or download finishes. Any leftover temporary file is removed by a cleanup process once it is older than 60 minutes. The image tools use the PHP image library GD, and ImageMagick for HEIC, TIFF and SVG files; the PDF tools use the open-source programs Poppler and qpdf. Files can be up to 20 MB, and the page limits for PDFs and the pixel limits for images are stated on each tool's page.

That includes the bank statement, payment file, QR code, barcode, invoice, email, e-book, PDF inspection and photo tools added most recently. The PDF/A Checker & Converter is a mix: its checks run in your browser, and only its Convert button uploads the PDF. The OCR in the two editors recognises English only and can make mistakes, which the editors say; Bangla OCR recognises Bangla and English and says how unreliable it can be. How we write and check tool pages

Before a page goes live we read how the tool is implemented, test it on files made for the purpose (including damaged, oversized and unusual ones), and write only what the tests show. Our guides follow the same rule and exist only where a tool raises a question that does not fit on its own page. Who runs it, and how it is paid for

Free Tool Desk is run independently by its owner. It currently shows no advertising, and nothing on the site is sold. If advertising is added in the future, this and the other policy pages will be updated first. You can reach us through the contact page or by email at freetooldesk@gmail.com.
