PDF to PNG Converter

Turn the first page of a PDF into a PNG at 150 DPI, with crisp text and no JPG artifacts. Only page 1 is converted.

Free to use No sign-up required Files deleted after processing

PNG keeps the edges of text and line art exactly as drawn, which makes it the better choice for a page with small type, a diagram or a chart. This tool converts page 1 only, at a fixed 150 DPI. It is the same engine as PDF to JPG, so the same page size gives the same pixel size; the difference is the file type and what that does to file size.

Overview

About PDF to PNG

What you get

Page 1 is drawn at 150 dots per inch as a full-colour PNG with an opaque white page background; the picture has no transparency. A Letter page is 1275 × 1650 pixels and an A4 page 1241 × 1754. The file is named after your PDF with "-page-1" added. Resolution cannot be changed, and nothing but the first page is converted.

When PNG is the better format

JPG is lossy, and the faint speckling it can leave around small text and thin lines is what PNG avoids. Pick PNG for pages of text, forms, tables, charts, line drawings and screenshots. Pick JPG for photographs, where PNG becomes very large. These are sizes from generated PDFs:

Page 1 of a generated PDFPNGJPG
A4, 40 lines of text379 KB281 KB
A4 landscape, full-page photo2.35 MB162 KB
A4, one short line of text (almost blank)12 KB36 KB

Generated locally; not a benchmark; not a guaranteed result. PNG is not always the larger file. Pages that are mostly flat colour compress very well as PNG, and here the nearly blank page was three times smaller as PNG than as JPG.

Large pages

The image size follows the page size at 150 DPI. An A0 poster page (2384 × 3370 points) came out at 4967 × 7022 pixels, around 35 megapixels. If you convert technical drawings, check the page size first with the PDF Page Size Analyzer. To make an oversized PNG easier to handle afterwards, use the Image Resizer.

Other pages, and other outputs

Extract the page you need into its own PDF with Extract PDF Pages, then convert it here. The result is a flat picture: text is not selectable and links and form fields are gone. For the text itself use PDF to Text. If you need the PNG inside a PDF again, see PNG to PDF. The limits are 20 MB and 200 pages, and a PDF that needs a password to open is rejected.

Compatibility

Supported Formats

Accepts PDF files up to 20 MB and 200 pages, identified by their contents. Only page 1 is converted. The result is one PNG at 150 DPI. Password-protected PDFs are rejected.

Good to Know

Limitations

First page only, with no page chooser and no ZIP of all pages. Resolution is fixed at 150 DPI. Photographic pages make very large PNGs. The result is a flat picture without selectable text, links or form fields. Password-protected PDFs are rejected.

Files are processed on our servers and are not shared with third parties. Files are deleted as soon as processing or download finishes. Any leftover temporary file is removed automatically by our cleanup process within the configured retention period (60 minutes). See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose PNG or JPG for a PDF page?

PNG for text, tables, charts and line art, where it keeps edges crisp. JPG for photographs, where PNG can be more than ten times larger: 2.35 MB against 162 KB in our test.

Will the PNG be transparent?

No. The page is drawn on a white background and the PNG is opaque.

Can I convert all pages or choose the DPI?

No. Only page 1 is converted, at 150 DPI. Extract another page into its own PDF to convert that one.

Why is the PNG for my PDF so large?

Either the page is large, since the image grows with it (an A0 page gave 4967 × 7022 pixels), or it contains photographs, which PNG stores without loss. Try PDF to JPG for photo pages.

Is the text in the PNG selectable?

No. It is a picture of the page. Use PDF to Text to extract the text.
