The EPC QR code, known in Germany and Austria as GiroCode, is the square code on many European invoices that carries the data of a SEPA credit transfer. Your banking app reads it, but sometimes you only want to see what is inside: which IBAN, which name, how much, and which reference. Drop an image, a screenshot or a PDF here and the code is decoded and laid out field by field, with an IBAN check and a copy button next to each value.

This tool reads codes. The EPC QR (GiroCode) generator creates them. Reading happens in your browser, and payment data is not stored or sent anywhere.

Overview

About EPC QR / GiroCode Reader

What is shown. The service tag (BCD), version (001 or 002), character set, identification (SCT), BIC, beneficiary name, IBAN, amount with currency, purpose code, structured creditor reference or unstructured remittance text, and the note to the payer. Every value has a copy button, the IBAN is shown in groups of four, and the raw lines of the code are available for inspection.

What is checked. The checks follow the EPC guideline for the code (EPC069-12): service tag and identification, version and character set, IBAN format and mod-97 checksum, BIC format (and that version 001 includes one), name up to 70 characters, amount in the form EUR12.34 and at least EUR 0.01, a structured reference up to 35 characters and an unstructured text up to 140 (never both), the RF check digits of an ISO 11649 creditor reference, a four-letter purpose code and the payload size of at most 331 bytes. Problems are listed in plain language, and if the data fails a check the tool says to ask the sender before paying.

Where it finds the code. In a PDF each page is drawn at 200 dpi and searched, in an image the code is searched at several scales and in overlapping tiles, so a code on a screenshot or a phone photo is usually found. If a code cannot be decoded, you can paste the text a scanner app gave you instead.

Not the same as other payment codes. A Swiss QR-bill (starts with SPC), a Czech SPAYD code, a Slovak PAY by square code and UPI codes look similar but are different formats. The reader recognises that the text is not an EPC code and does not display it.

Compatibility

Supported Formats

PDF up to 50 MB (the first 40 pages are searched), PNG, JPEG and WebP images up to 30 MB, or pasted text. The code must be a QR code with an EPC payload (service tag BCD). Other barcode types are not read by this tool.

Good to Know

Limitations

This tool reads and checks the data in the code. It cannot tell whether the account belongs to the payee or whether the invoice is genuine: compare the IBAN and the name with an independent source, such as a previous invoice or the company's website, before you pay. Blurred, cut-off or very small codes may not decode, and a damaged code may decode to wrong data, which is why the IBAN checksum is shown.

The checks follow the published EPC guideline; banks can apply stricter rules. A passing check is a technical result, not an assurance about the payment.

This tool runs entirely in your browser — your file is never uploaded to our servers. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the invoice or the payment data uploaded?

No. The file is decoded in your browser. The data is shown on the page and is not stored, logged or sent to our server.

What is the difference between this reader and the GiroCode generator?

The reader decodes an existing EPC QR code. The generator creates a new one from payment details. They are separate tools.

Can it read a Swiss QR-bill or a Czech QR payment?

It recognises that those are different formats and tells you so. For Swiss QR-bills use the Swiss QR-bill Reader on this site.

Why does it say the IBAN failed the checksum?

The mod-97 test catches most typing and reading errors. A failed code should not be used for a payment until the sender confirms the IBAN.

The code on my PDF is not found. What can I do?

Try a larger screenshot of just the code, a sharper scan, or paste the text from a scanner app. Codes that are very small or have low contrast can fail.

What is the purpose code?

A four-letter ISO 20022 code (for example CHAR for charity) that tells the bank the type of payment. It is optional and often empty.
