A visa photo can be rejected for reasons you can measure (wrong size, wrong file type, head too small) and for reasons you have to judge yourself (shadows, expression, glasses). This tool crops your photo for one of two clearly separated modes, measures what it can, and gives you a checklist for the rest.
The two modes do not share rules: the UK digital-photo requirements and a Schengen-style 35 × 45 mm portrait are different things. Consulates and visa centres can add their own rules, and nothing here promises that a photo will be accepted.

Overview
About Schengen / UK Visa Photo Checker
UK profile. This follows the GOV.UK guidance "How to take a photo for a visa application or permission" (updated 12 February 2026): a digital photo of at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, at least 50 KB and no more than 6 MB, a JPG or JPEG file, vertically oriented, not mirrored or flipped, in colour, taken against a plain light-coloured background in clear contrast with you, showing head, shoulders and upper body, not altered by software. The tool measures pixel size, file type, orientation and file size; mirroring, background and face position are not measured in this profile and are on the checklist you confirm yourself, together with: expression, mouth closed, eyes open and visible, no shadows, no red eye, no glasses unless medically necessary, no head covering unless religious or medical, no other people or objects. GOV.UK states no head-size figure for this service, so none is applied.
Schengen-style profile. This is a profile for a 35 × 45 mm printed portrait with the head (crown to chin) measuring 32 to 36 mm, about 71 to 80 per cent of the height; the crop is locked to 35 : 45. These figures are the widely published ICAO-style values. No single official EU text carrying them was verified while building the tool, so it presents them as a profile, not as the law, and many consulates apply their own specification. The tool checks the proportions, the number of pixels for a 300 dpi print, the head height from two markers you set on the preview (optionally estimated with the face detector), whether the face is centred when it was detected, and a rough estimate of whether the background looks light and even. Orientation is fixed to portrait by the locked crop. Mirroring cannot be detected and is on the checklist. File format is always JPEG for the download, and no file-size rule is applied because none was verified for this profile.
Crop and print sheet. You move and resize the crop frame, see the result, and download a JPEG. In Schengen mode you can also generate a print sheet (10 × 15 cm, 13 × 18 cm, A6 or A4) with the photos tiled at 300 dpi and thin cut lines, as a PNG or as a PDF with the exact page size. Print at 100 per cent and measure a printed photo with a ruler.
Compatibility
Supported Formats
JPEG, PNG and WebP photos up to 30 MB, 12,000 px on a side and 40 megapixels (decided by the file content). Output is a JPEG. UK mode output is within 50 KB to 6 MB when the photo allows it; Schengen output is 413 × 531 px (300 dpi) or 827 × 1063 px (600 dpi).

Good to Know
Limitations
No acceptance is promised. The tool measures a few things. It cannot see expression, shadows, glasses, a head covering, blur, colour accuracy or retouching, and the face detector only estimates the head position. A photo that passes every check here can still be rejected.
Different countries, consulates and visa centres can require additional or different specifications, including photo age, background colour and printing. The Schengen mode is a profile and not an official EU text; the UK mode follows GOV.UK as updated on 12 February 2026 and can change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo is cropped and checked in your browser, and the face detector, if you use it, runs there as well.
Can I use one photo for both a UK and a Schengen application?
Not by assuming it. The UK needs a digital JPEG of at least 600 × 750 px; a Schengen application usually needs a printed 35 × 45 mm photo with its own head-size and background expectations. Prepare each with its own profile.
Where do the Schengen numbers come from?
They are the widely published ICAO-style values for a 35 × 45 mm portrait with a head of 32 to 36 mm. The tool states that they are a profile because no single official EU text with these figures was verified. Check your consulate.
What are the UK requirements the tool measures?
At least 600 × 750 px, at least 50 KB and at most 6 MB, JPG/JPEG, vertical. The other UK requirements are in the checklist for you to confirm.
Why does it ask me to set the head lines?
Head height has to be measured from the top of the head to the chin. A face detector cannot find the top of the hair exactly, so you set or correct the two lines yourself.
Will this guarantee my visa photo is accepted?
No. Acceptance is decided by the authority that receives it. The tool helps you avoid measurable mistakes.
