To save paper you want 2 or 4 pages on each sheet; to make a small booklet you want pages arranged so that, printed on both sides and folded, they read in order. Both are "imposition", and printer dialogs do them badly or not at all. This tool does it in your browser, shows the page order, and reports exactly how many pages and sheets result.

It is a layout aid for office and home printing, not a commercial prepress system: no printer marks, creep or bleed handling, and no print certification is claimed. The file is not uploaded.

About PDF N-Up & Booklet Maker

N-up. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 16 pages per sheet on A3, A4, A5, Letter, Legal or Tabloid paper. The tool tries both grid directions and both sheet orientations and uses the one that makes the pages largest (or the orientation you force), so two portrait pages go side by side on a landscape sheet and two landscape pages stack on a portrait sheet. Pages are placed across then down, or down then across, with margins and a gutter you set, and each page is scaled to fit its cell without distortion. An optional thin frame marks the page edges.

Booklet. For a folded booklet the page count is padded with blank pages to a multiple of 4, because each sheet of paper makes four pages. The sheets are then imposed two pages per side: for the first sheet the front carries the last page on the left and page 1 on the right, the back carries page 2 and the second-last page, and so on inward. Printed double-sided (flip on the short edge), folded in half and stapled in the middle, the pages read in order. A right-to-left binding option mirrors the layout for scripts that read from the right.

Report. The result shows input pages, blank pages added, sheets of paper, printed sides and the page order of every side (for example "8 | 1" on the first front), so you can check it before printing.

Quality. Pages are placed as vector content, so text stays sharp. Links, form fields and annotations are not carried over.

Good to Know

Limitations

This is a layout tool, not commercial imposition software, and it makes no claim of print certification. There is no creep compensation (the shift of inner pages caused by the thickness of folded paper), no printer marks, bleed or trim handling, and no colour management. Thick booklets will show page-position drift.

Pages are scaled to fit their cells, so text gets smaller as more pages share a sheet. Links, form fields, comments and other annotations are not carried over. Duplex printing must be set to flip on the short edge for booklets; different printers name this differently, so print a test copy of a small booklet first.

Why were blank pages added to my booklet?

Each sheet of paper makes four pages when folded, so the page count must be a multiple of 4. Blanks are added at the end; the report shows how many.

How do I print the booklet?

Print double-sided, flipping on the short edge, collate the sheets in order, fold the stack in half and staple along the fold. Test with one copy first because printers label duplex options differently.

What is the difference between N-up and a booklet?

N-up places pages in reading order on each sheet to save paper. A booklet changes the page order so the folded result reads correctly.

Can it place pages on a landscape sheet automatically?

Yes. With automatic orientation the tool chooses the sheet orientation and grid direction that makes the pages largest; you can also force portrait or landscape.

Is the output suitable for a commercial printer?

It is meant for office and home printing. It has no creep, marks or bleed handling and no certification, so use professional prepress tools for commercial work.
