Signature Background Remover (Transparent PNG)

Turn a photo or scan of your signature into ink on a transparent background. Automatic first, then erase and restore brushes to fix what it got wrong. In your browser.

Free to use No sign-up required Nothing is uploaded

You signed a sheet of paper, photographed it, and now need the signature without the paper so it can sit on a letter, a form or a template. This tool treats the problem as ink on paper rather than "subject on background": it estimates how bright the paper is under each part of the picture, keeps only what is darker than the paper, and writes the result as a PNG with transparent paper.

It works on your device, so the signature photo is not uploaded to a cutout service. Because automatic extraction can never be perfect, you get erase and restore brushes, three sliders and a choice of ink colour, and a preview on a checkerboard, white or dark background.

Overview

About Signature Background Remover

How the extraction works. The picture is converted to brightness. A smooth estimate of the paper brightness is built by removing strokes that are narrower than a window (a grey-level closing) and blurring the result, so uneven lighting and soft shadows become part of the "paper". Each pixel is then compared with the paper next to it: at or above the paper level it becomes fully transparent, clearly darker it becomes ink, and between the two the opacity ramps smoothly. That is why a shadow across the page disappears while the pen strokes stay.

The controls. Detection strength decides how readily light strokes (a pale pen, a thin line) count as ink. Edge softness is how wide the ramp between paper and ink is. Remove specks deletes small isolated blobs such as dust. Ink colour keeps the original colour of the stroke (blue pens stay blue), or makes the signature black, blue or any colour you pick.

Manual cleanup. Use the erase brush to paint away stray marks, and the restore brush to bring back faint strokes the automatic step dropped. Undo steps back; clearing the edits returns to the automatic result. The PNG can be cropped to the signature with a small margin.

Size. Large photos are reduced to about 1600 pixels on the long side for working, which keeps the page fast and is plenty for a signature. The PNG you save has that size.

Compatibility

Supported Formats

JPEG, PNG and WebP pictures up to 30 MB, 12,000 pixels on a side and 40 megapixels (decided by the content, not the name). The result is a PNG with an alpha channel. A scan or flat photo of dark ink on light paper works best.

Guide

How to Use Signature Background Remover

  1. Sign with a dark pen on plain white paper and photograph it straight on in good light, filling the frame with the signature. Choose the picture.
  2. Adjust detection strength, softness and specks until the preview looks clean. Switch the preview background to check the edges.
  3. Use the erase and restore brushes on anything that is still wrong.
  4. Pick the ink colour and download the transparent PNG.

Good to Know

Limitations

Automatic extraction cannot be perfect. Shadows with hard edges, folds, lined or patterned paper, a very light pen, a strong colour cast and strokes that run off the edge can leave stray marks or break thin lines. Always check the result on a white and on a dark background and fix it with the brushes.

A signature image is only a picture. Pasting it into a document is not a qualified or legally binding electronic signature by itself, and some offices do not accept it. Keep the original photo private: anyone who gets a clean signature image can copy it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my signature photo uploaded?

No. The extraction runs in your browser and the PNG is built there. Nothing is sent to our server or to a cutout service.

Why does it use brightness instead of "AI background removal"?

A signature is thin ink on paper. General background removers are built for people and objects and often cut or fill thin strokes. Comparing each pixel with the paper brightness is simple, predictable and local.

Parts of my signature are missing. What do I do?

Raise the detection strength, or use the restore brush over the missing strokes. If the pen is very light, a darker pen or better light helps more than any setting.

There are grey marks around the signature.

Lower the detection strength, raise "Remove specks", or paint over them with the erase brush. Flat, evenly lit paper gives the cleanest result.

Can I change the colour of the signature?

Yes. Keep the original, or choose black, blue or any colour. The strokes keep their shape and opacity.

Is a pasted signature image legally valid?

That depends on the country and on what you sign. A picture of a signature is not by itself an advanced or qualified electronic signature. Ask the other party what they accept.
