A JPG is one still picture, so converting a GIF always gives one still. For an animated GIF that is the first frame, and there is no way to pick a different one. Any transparent area becomes white, because JPG has no transparency. This page also shows when a GIF converts to a larger file, which surprises people with small flat-colour GIFs.

Overview
About GIF to JPG
What you get from an animated GIF
The first frame is converted and the rest are ignored. We checked with a three-frame GIF (red, then green, then blue): the JPG was red. The tool does not offer a frame picker or a "download all frames" option, so to get a later frame you need another program. A static GIF converts the same way, and the width and height of the picture do not change.
Transparency becomes white
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with white. In our test, a GIF with a transparent background and a red disc came out as a red disc on white. You cannot choose another background colour here. If you need the transparency kept, convert to PNG with a different tool; this site's PNG to JPG flattens to white in the same way, but there is no GIF to PNG converter.
Will the file get smaller?
It depends on what is in the GIF. JPG is written at quality 85 and suits photographs. A GIF is limited to 256 colours and often holds flat graphics, which GIF stores very efficiently:
| Test GIF | GIF | JPG | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo-like picture, 600 × 400, 256 colours | 79 KB | 28 KB | -65% |
| Flat red rectangle, 120 × 80 | 198 B | 851 B | +330% |
Generated locally; not a benchmark; not a guaranteed result. A photograph saved as a GIF is the case where converting helps. A tiny flat-colour graphic is already smaller as a GIF than it can ever be as a JPG, and JPG also adds faint blurring around sharp edges. Compare the sizes before you replace the original.
Colour and quality
The GIF's 256-colour palette is decoded to full colour, so a JPG does not get more colours back; it just stores the ones that were there. JPG is lossy, so the result is not an exact copy. Quality is fixed at 85 and there is no slider. To make the JPG smaller afterwards use the JPG Compressor, or resize it first.

Good to Know
Limitations
Only the first frame of an animated GIF is converted, and you cannot choose another. Transparent areas turn white. Quality is fixed at 85. A small GIF of flat colours or text can become larger as a JPG, and JPG can blur sharp edges slightly. One file is converted at a time.
Files are processed on our servers and are not shared with third parties. Files are deleted as soon as processing or download finishes. Any leftover temporary file is removed automatically by our cleanup process within the configured retention period (60 minutes). See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose which frame of an animated GIF becomes the JPG?
No. The first frame is always used. If you need a different frame, extract it with a desktop program and convert that image.
What colour replaces transparent areas?
White. In our test, a transparent GIF with a red disc came out as a red disc on a white background. Other background colours are not offered.
Why did my GIF get bigger as a JPG?
GIF stores flat colour areas very compactly, while JPG is built for photographs. A 198-byte flat-colour test GIF became an 851-byte JPG. Photographic GIFs go the other way: a 79 KB photo-like GIF became 28 KB.
Will the picture look different from the GIF?
The GIF's 256 colours are kept as they are, but JPG is lossy, so very sharp edges and small text can pick up faint blurring. At quality 85 it is usually hard to see on photographs.
Is there a GIF to PNG converter here?
No. This site converts GIF to JPG only. If you need to keep transparency, use a desktop tool.
