Image Compressor

Compress a JPG, PNG or WebP without choosing a tool. It detects the format and applies that format's fixed setting.

Free to use No sign-up required Files deleted after processing

This is the all-in-one entry point: upload a JPG, PNG or WebP and the tool recognises it and compresses it with that format's fixed setting. There is no quality slider. It gives exactly the same file as the dedicated JPG, PNG and WebP compressors, so use it when you do not want to pick, and read on to see which files shrink, which do not, and what usually saves more than compression.

Accepts JPG/PNG/WEBP · up to 20 MB each

Overview

About Image Compressor

What it does for each format

FormatSettingKind of change
JPGQuality 75Lossy: re-encoded at a lower quality
WebPQuality 75Lossy: re-encoded at a lower quality
PNGLossless, default compression levelNo pixel change, but the file may not get smaller

The format is read from the file's contents, not its name, and the result is in the same format. We ran a JPG, a PNG and a transparent PNG through both this tool and the dedicated compressors: the outputs were byte-for-byte identical in every case. For the details of each format, including the cases where a result is larger, see JPG Compressor, PNG Compressor and WebP Compressor.

Measured examples

Test fileBeforeAfterChange
Photo-like JPG, 1200 × 800, quality 90117 KB42 KB-64%
Photo-like PNG, 1200 × 8001.55 MB1.66 MB+7%
Small transparent PNG, 300 × 2001.3 KB1.4 KB+10%

Generated locally; not a benchmark; not a guaranteed result. The JPG shrank because it was re-encoded from quality 90 to 75. Both PNGs got larger: PNG here is always written losslessly at the default level, and a file already saved by another encoder can come back bigger. If a PNG will not shrink, converting it is the usual fix, for example PNG to WebP if you need transparency or PNG to JPG if you do not.

What compression does not touch

Dimensions stay the same. Camera data (EXIF, GPS) and colour profiles are not kept in the result, and a JPG that carried a rotation flag is turned upright. Animated WebP, GIF and BMP files are not accepted.

Often a better first step

If you need a much smaller file, reduce the pixel dimensions first with the Image Resizer. Halving each side leaves a quarter of the pixels, which saves more than any quality setting. The guide how to reduce an image for email and the web walks through the order of steps.

Compatibility

Supported Formats

Accepts JPG, PNG and WebP, identified by their contents. The result is in the same format. Limits: 20 MB, 12,000 px per side and 40 megapixels. GIF, BMP, TIFF and animated WebP are not accepted. One file is compressed at a time.

Highlights

Features

  • No format to choose The format is read from the file's contents, and the same format comes back.
  • Same output as the dedicated tools We compared this tool with the JPG and PNG compressors on the same files and the results were byte-for-byte identical.
  • Fixed, stated settings JPG and WebP at quality 75; PNG lossless at the default level. No slider to guess at.

Applications

Use Cases

  • Shrinking a photo that is slightly over an upload limit
  • Compressing a mix of JPG, PNG and WebP files one at a time without choosing a page for each
  • Getting a quick before-and-after size for an image you are about to put on a web page

Good to Know

Limitations

Settings are fixed: quality 75 for JPG and WebP, and lossless for PNG. A PNG may come back larger than it went in. JPG and WebP lose some detail, and compressing the same file again loses a little more each time. Camera data and colour profiles are dropped. The tool cannot aim for a target size.

Files are processed on our servers and are not shared with third parties. Files are deleted as soon as processing or download finishes. Any leftover temporary file is removed automatically by our cleanup process within the configured retention period (60 minutes). See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this different from the JPG, PNG and WebP compressors?

No. For the same file the result is identical. The dedicated pages exist because each format behaves differently and has its own explanation; this page just chooses for you.

Why did my PNG get bigger?

PNG is compressed without loss here, so there is no lossy shortcut to make it smaller. A PNG that was already well compressed by another program can come back slightly larger. Convert it to WebP, or to JPG if it has no transparency, or shrink its pixel size first.

Can I choose the quality or a target size?

No. JPG and WebP are fixed at quality 75 and PNG is lossless. If you need a file under a specific size, resize first, compress, check the size, and repeat with a smaller width if needed.

Does compressing remove my location data?

Yes, as a side effect: EXIF and GPS data are not copied to the result. If removing metadata is the only goal, the Image Metadata Remover does that without re-encoding the picture.

Should I compress the same image several times?

No. Each pass on a JPG or WebP re-encodes it and loses a little more detail while saving less each time. Compress once from the best original you have.
