Bangla OCR: Tips for Better Results
Last updated October 6, 2026
Optical character recognition (OCR) turns a picture of text into text you can edit and search. For Bangla it works, within limits, and the quality of the picture matters more than any setting. These tips come from how the recognition engine behaves, and they apply to Bangla OCR and to any other Bangla OCR program.
Photograph the page well
- Straight on and flat. Hold the phone parallel to the page. A tilted photo makes letters wider on one side and lines slope. If the page is already photographed at an angle, flatten it first with the Document Photo Cleaner.
- Even light, no shadow. Your own shadow across the page costs more accuracy than a slightly lower resolution.
- Sharp, and large enough. Aim for letters about 30 pixels tall or more. A blurred or tiny picture cannot be rescued by enlarging it; the tool warns you when the picture looks soft.
- Keep the page whole. Cut-off lines at the edge produce partial letters.
Choose the settings that fit the picture
- Language. Use Bangla for Bangla text and "Bangla + English" only when English words are really mixed in, because the extra language can create mistakes at the boundaries.
- Layout. Automatic layout is for full pages. For a heading, a caption or a single line, choose "single line" or "one block"; the engine does not waste effort looking for columns.
- Picture improvement. Grey conversion, even lighting and contrast usually help phone photos of paper. If your picture is already a clean scan, switch them off and compare.
- Rotation. A sideways picture produces nonsense. Rotate it in 90° steps first.
Know what goes wrong in Bangla
Bangla script has joined letters (conjuncts), vowel signs placed before, after, above and below a consonant, and many similar shapes, such as ব and র, or ত and ৎ. Small or decorative fonts and printing artefacts blur these differences. The usual errors are wrong or missing vowel signs, split or merged conjuncts, confusion between similar letters, and broken words at line ends. Digits can be recognised as Bangla (০-৯) or English (0-9) digits; the tool can convert them all to the form you want.
Handwriting is not supported, and tables, multi-column pages and text over photographs are unreliable.
Read the confidence honestly
The confidence figure is the engine\'s own estimate, not a measured accuracy. A high number can still hide a wrong letter; a low number is a sign to look more carefully. The count of uncertain words tells you how much proofreading to expect. Always compare the text with the picture before using it.
If the PDF already has text
OCR is for pictures. If you copy text from a PDF and it looks like Latin gibberish, the PDF uses a legacy font and OCR is the wrong tool: Bijoy PDF to Unicode reads the real text and is more reliable. Our guide Bijoy vs Unicode explains why. For text in an English-language scan inside a PDF, see PDF text extraction vs OCR.
Keep private pages private
The OCR engine and the Bengali model are served by this website and the picture is read in your browser, so a private page does not have to leave your device. The text you produce stays in the result box until you close the page.
